Porta Pacis Visitor Centre

The new tourist reception building offers convenient conditions for the reception of approx. 200,000 tourists visiting the site each year. Designers took the surrounding topography and architecture into consideration to the maximum, and therefore the building is placed separately from the listed building complex of the abbey, embedded in the “garden” of the neighbouring Csokonai grove, landscaped with trees, shrubs and garden paths. The building deservedly won the Construction Industry Award for Excellence in 2014. When designing the exterior and interior and selecting the materials for the tourist reception building, designers strived to achieve simplicity and “accuracy”, in line with the location and the position of the building. The layout and the design of the interior spaces and rooms serve the purpose of a simple and rational traffic system.

“The Benedictine community was able to move back to the Tihany Abbey in 1994. The government returned the abbey under the condition that the museum function is maintained. The Porta Pacis Visitor Centre, which serves the needs of tourists visiting the abbey, is an essential element in achieving our goal. The challenging task of building the visitor centre to be located in the direct proximity of the abbey was awarded to Merkbau Építőipari Kft. Merkbau Kft solved the complex task with good scheduling, as well as flexible and precise work. The company’s exemplary approach greatly contributed to finding the right solutions to the challenges emerging during construction. In the weekly meetings/site visits the investor, the technical inspector and the contractor could discuss even the most delicate issues in an open and mutually supportive atmosphere. The building functions well. Our visitors, tour guides and we ourselves use it with great pleasure. In addition to welcoming guests and showing an introductory film, we have also organised conferences, concerts, receptions and civil weddings in the new building. Looking back on the few years since we started working together, I am grateful that this company has finally won the right to build the Porta Pacis Visitor Centre.”
