Basketball hall in Pannonhalma

The 1600 square-metre hall with a standard basketball court is four times the size of the previous building. It has a 1180-seat grandstand with two practice basketball courts that can be separated by dividing curtains. The three-storey building, divided into two parts, blends harmoniously into the historic-world heritage environment: it is nestled into the hillside. The larger part is for the play area, the smaller part, closer to the high school, for the additional functions. Connection with the high school is provided by a tunnel between the halls of the new and old gymnasiums, and there is also a footbridge from the road level next to the high school, which makes accessing the gymnasium easier during events. The building is covered with a walkable green roof, its western facade is split by windows and pillars.

“Our new gymnasium was built to replace the long outgrown old gymnasium of the Pannonhalma Benedictine High School. It was reassuring for us that the construction works were carried out by Merkbau Kft, a company with a strong local knowledge of the site of the Abbey, having constructed several other buildings such as the Abbey Winery, Viator Restaurant and Wine Bar, and the Saint Jacob Pilgrimage House. It was great to see the how the building was raised from the ground up, week by week. It was exciting to discuss with different experts, and understand each other’s viewpoint. Accordingly, we were able to work together in a good atmosphere during the meetings that accompanied the construction. We could make hopefully mutually beneficial decisions even in challenging situations, which occur naturally in such projects. Most importantly, the students of the high school have been using the gymnasium with satisfaction ever since. They can play basketball matches on home ground again. The initial euphoria is passed down from generation to generation.”
